Vander Meulen graduated from Hope College in 1897 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1900. He was licensed and ordained a minister by the Reformed Church in America in 1900. He held several pastorates before joining the faculty of Western Theological Seminary as a professor of the New Testament in 1920. He was also president of Western Theological Seminary from 1939-1942.

Cornelius vander Meulen graduated from Hope College in 1900 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1903. He practiced law in Holland from 1903-1913, then joined the De Pree Drug Company in Chicago. He returned to law in the 1930s and was appointed municipal judge in Holland in 1947. He served the court for 17 years.
